THE DETAILED INSTRUCTIONS!
INTRODUCTION
Any organisation or institution can get involved as a whole; alternatively people can get involved in small groups or even as individuals. Participants will be able to choose whatever they wish to do to help raise awareness for peace.
You may join the continuing Walk for Peace that began in July 2005 with the initial goal of walking 6000 miles by the end of November. The Walk has been very successful so far and by mid 2007 more than 8000 people have walked a total over32,000 miles (around the earth) and we are now heading out to the moon!! If you wish to join in this walk and add in your miles, you can read more about how to do this below.
By popular demand, we have created two new categories. One is for distances that are not walking, called Travelling for Peace, which includes cycling, flying, running – you name it and we will consider it. The other new category is Hours for Peace – you can choose something you wish to do with peace in your heart and send in your hours to be added in with others. Details for walking, travelling and hours for peace are below. If you think of something else you would like to do for peace and have registered, just let us know!
WALKING FOR PEACE - HOW IT WORKS
Measuring the distances – Making Pathways for Peace
The first thing to do is to choose a location and then to measure around a park, a lake, a playground, playing field, building or any other appropriate area to establish set distances marked out in lengths. Each of these could be called a ‘Pathway for Peace’ in recognition of and tribute to The World Peace Flame Pathway that was constructed in The Hague, The Netherlands in 2004 around the eternally burning World Peace Flame® monument there. Below is the statement signed by ambassadors from all the countries in the world marking this amazing event.
Ambassadors for Peace Ambassadors' statement, April 2004
The World Peace Flame Pathway is located outside the Peace Palace, home of the United Nations International Court of Justice, in The Hague, The Netherlands. It has been formed from stones holding special cultural significance provided by Embassies from 197 countries and regions, and as such represents all of humanity. The following statement was made by ambassadors from the international community on the opening of the Pathway on 27th April 2004.
"As ambassadors representing our countries for the formation of the World Peace Pathway in the 'peace and justice city' of The Hague, The Netherlands, we welcome the inauguration of this important monument to peace.
We believe our coming together in this initiative forms a powerful statement that the nations of the world can unite in peace and friendship. We are convinced that peace is not only possible; it is one of the most urgent needs of our time. We affirm that every single human being has the right to peace and justice; and that at the same time peace is a responsibility we must all assume.
As human beings it is natural that we aim to provide our own children with full and satisfying lives. As citizens of the world, we affirm an additional commitment. We will also endeavour to provide full and satisfying lives for humanity's future generations.
It takes courage, faith and commitment to unite in the cause of peace. The World Peace Pathway will serve to inspire individuals and nations worldwide to come together in peace, solidarity and friendship."
Educational Participants – how to play a part
In schools with smaller children, distances around the playground could be marked out in yards or metres so that each child walks as far as they wish without feeling they have to go a long distance. For older children and young adults, walking a mile/kilometre or even further would be a respectable goal.
A primary school, for example, could then choose a day or a week to focus their efforts on participating in Moving for Peace and classes could walk around their designated Pathway for Peace. An assembly introducing the activity would be an excellent way to initiate the walking. We have a CD with assemblies and other materials on it that we can send to you. Please contact information below.
The school would then send the names of the children and the distance each one walked, along with the date to the central location (information at the end) for tallying. Each child would then receive a certificate with their name, distance walked and date, and depending where you are, a small World Peace Flame® Candle lit from the Original World Peace Flame® in Wales. This would all be explained in the assembly, which would also offer a marvellous opportunity to talk about Peaceful Conflict Resolution.
For older children in secondary education and young adults in colleges and universities, other means of introducing Moving for Peace could be pursued. Secondary schools, colleges and universities could measure the distance around buildings, playing fields, or other areas and designate the Pathway for Peace to be used. Names and distances can be sent as outlined above.
Participating Religious Groups – Getting involved as a group
Another example would be for religious groups, who could measure the distance around their places of worship or some appropriate walk nearby. On a particular day of worship, the congregation could walk as a whole group around their chosen and measured Pathway for Peace. Information would be tallied centrally and then each person would be given a Certificate of Participation and a small World Peace Flame® candle. This could be made into a special ceremony.
Walking Clubs – Walking for Peace in the countryside
Walking Clubs could establish distances for members to cover or have specific Walk for Peace days. Each person would then record their own walking distances, to be tallied centrally and receive a Certificate of Participation and a small candle. Of course, more than a single walk might be done by each member; thus adding up each person’s total over time would culminate in their Certificate recording multiple tallied distances.
Businesses and Community Groups – How to take part
Businesses and community groups are encouraged to join in Moving for Peace. Each organisation will establish either its own Pathway for Peace to walk, or alternatively people can walk on their own chosen pathway, for example in a local park. After central tallying, each would receive the Certificate and World Peace Flame® candle.
Small Groups, Families and Individuals – Every person counts!
Anyone who hears about Moving for Peace can get involved without being attached to any particular organisation or institution. Walks in the countryside, in local parks, even to and from the bus on the way to work and back would all be possible walking moments for peace. Central tallying would take place, and a Certificate and Candle would be given to each participant.
TRAVELLING FOR PEACE – How to participate
To participate in Travelling for Peace, submit the distances you have covered – for example, some already registered miles include a couple who travelled around the world, taking the World Peace Flame® with them and meeting with groups to discuss peace. If you wish to cycle for peace, run for peace, fly for peace, or come up with another idea, just let us know! You will receive a certificate and candle for this, too.
HOURS FOR PEACE – How to spend your time
This category is for people who are not doing things that involve distances, but instead can be measured in time. This includes such things as dancing for peace, knitting for peace, cross-stitching for peace, making certificates and candles for peace, doing yoga for peace, gardening for peace – this is open to ideas that you send in! Again, a certificate and candle will be sent to you.
WALKING EVENTS AND OTHER ACTIVITIES
Please let us know of the events and activities you wish to sponsor so we can coordinate these and collect the information to add to the miles/kilometres walked and hours for peaceful activities. Certificates and candles will be given to all participants although for larger groups, one World Peace Flame® candle and sufficient candle wrappers along with instructions will be sent. The following page has a checklist to help you plan your particular events and also tells you how to get in touch.
Here are some of the many peace websites online to look at:
