MOVING FOR PEACE FLYER

Doing something personal for Peace is a simple way to show awareness of the concept that Peace begins within each person. The Walk for Peace began in Leeds, UK, as a regional effort from schools, colleges, universities, various places of worship, walking clubs, local groups and any others who wished to participate. Each person kept track of how far they walked for peace and the distances were added up together. The first accumulated distance was announced on the 20th November at an event of the Together for Peace 2005 festival and we far exceeded our first goal of walking the distance from Leeds to Hiroshima (approximately 6,000 miles/10,000 kilometres). At the end of the year, our total number of walkers was (approximately) 5913 and the total miles for 2005 were 24,532. Our second goal, to walk around the earth (25,000 miles/40,000 kilometres) has nearly been reached! We will continue walking and are now heading for the Moon (250,000 miles!).

The Walk for Peace became known by people around the world who got involved, from Bahrain to California to Australia to Canada to The Netherlands. It is now being upgraded to MOVING FOR PEACE. In this new phase, people can continue to walk for peace, but you can also do almost anything you wish – just ask us! We will continue to have running totals for WALKING and will create new running totals MOVING FOR PEACE. For example, there will be miles for people who cycle for peace, or ski for peace, or who use motorized wheel chairs or scooters who are disabled or elderly [but no driving!]. There will also be Hours for Peace for those who wish to do something that cannot be measured in distance – so for example, dancing for peace, or knitting for peace, or singing for peace or making candles of the World Peace Flame® for peace will all be calculated in minutes. Every Activity Counts!!

For further information on current miles covered and news about Moving for Peace, go to: http://praxis.leedsmet.ac.uk/praxis and click on the Peace Activities and Information on the left. To register your activity and to receive your World Peace Flame® candle please send name, address, activity, date and miles/minutes to Dr Edward Halpin, Director of the Praxis Centre at Leeds Metropolitan University, Priestly Hall, Headingley Campus, Leeds LS6 3QS, United Kingdom or email: e.halpin@leedsmet.ac.uk

The World Peace Flame® was created in 1999 when seven Flames of Peace were lit on five continents, flown across the oceans, and united into one. In an extraordinary show of goodwill and co-operation military air forces and commercial airlines joined with hundreds of previously unconnected individuals to bring a dream alive. In April 2004, for the first time in history, 197 Ambassadors, representing all of humanity, signed a Statement for Peace and created the World Peace Flame Pathway, containing significant stones representing each nation, around the eternal flame monument outside the Peace Palace in The Hague, The Netherlands. Since that time, people across the world have had remarkable, transformative experiences in the presence of candles lit from the World Peace Flame®, using it to bring an extra dimension of peace, clarity and kindness into their homes, workplaces, schools, hospitals and places of worship. Millions of World Peace Flame® candles are with ordinary folks and it is being presented to international decision makers and installed in monuments in major cities throughout the world. www.worldpeaceflame.com
